about 'Gillett square project'

Gillett Square (where the market stalls are placed) formed the focus of redevelopment planned to provide new apartments, studios, a cultural centre and cafe. It is bordered by the Dalston Culture House and home of the Vortex Jazz Club, the Bradbury Street Workspace and a number of market stalls (business start-up units). The square is brought to life by new buildings and activities to Dalston. Hackney Co-operative Developments manages ten market stall units along the south side of the square.

The square has been developed by the Gillett Square Partnership, which currently comprises Hackney Co-operative Developments, Groundwork East London, Hackney Council and Design for London. Following Hackney Council's decision that the existing car park could be redeveloped into a new public space, the Gillett Square Partnership was established.

Hackney is placed in North of London. Until 2006, this place was the worst place to live and got high incident rate. However, the city of London try to redevelop the north east of London include hackney. This is because of Olympics. The development plan made the synergy effects with the 100 public spaces in London starts from 2002 by the Lord Mayor of London who is Ken Livingstone. This project was idea of developing rural area of London. Especially from Hackney the area of Dalston culture house used to be the place for homeless people to sleep and live. However after the redeveloping, this place became representative area.

This partnership operates as an overarching strategic body for all aspects of the square’s function and development. Whilst this space is owned and maintained by London Borough of Hackney, it’s cultural and enterprise uses are the responsibility of the ‘Gillett Squared’ management group led by Hackney Co-operative Developments as its public entertainment license holder. Gillett Square’s designation as a market venue is currently in process with London Borough of Hackney in partnership with Hackney Co-operative Developments.
